the harmonica [3.] - why only one harp?

People often ask me why I don't play a chromonica or play on different key bluesharps.

Some people are of the opinion that a harmonica is a harmonica no matter what type or model so you'd better choose "the right tool for the job".

I don't think of the different harmonicas that way. To me the diatonic harmonica is as different from the chrom as a trombone is from the trumpet. Both may use the same principle to generate sound but there is a world of difference in the way they are played and in the way they sound. And as far as chromatic harmonicas go, I have a short and blunt answer: I don't like them.

Don't get me wrong, I know some wonderfull chromatic players and they make beautifull music on the chromatic, but I am a diatonic harmonica player and I just don't like the feeling of playing a chromatic. I don't like the way the notes sound, I miss the directness of the diatonic and most of all I miss that roughness and instability

practice [4.] - expanding the blues

When first started playing I was trying to play blues like everybody who has just bought his first bluesharp. I learned to play a second position bluesscale, but since I didn't think that it would fit on all the chords of the 12 bar blues I thought that I would also have to be able to play the first and third position bluesscales.

By the time I found out that you could use the blues scale throughout the 12 bar progression I had already learned to play the other scales and it turned out to be a rather nice thing to be able to do.

So If you are a second position player and you are familiar with the second position blues scale and you want to expand your abilities on the diatonic harmonica, then it might be a good idea to start from the different bluesscale.

You have to familiarize yourself the chords in a key, you have to know where the imprtant notes of the key are and how they work together to create harmonic functions. In order to get you started on this road we will start by taking a look at the primary triads of the major scale.

The diatonic major scale can be split up into 3 very important triads: the tonic, the subdominant and the dominant triad. The tonic triad is the triad built upon the root of the scale, the subdominant triad is build upon the 4th note of the scale and the dominant triad is built upon the fith of the scale. Each of these triads is a major triad consisting of a major third on the bottom and a minor third on top.

One year since I did the entrance exam, got accepted to and thrown out of the conservatory all in one afternoon. (Read the full story here)

Last year I wrote that I was going to go to school and be free from that lingering wish to go to a conservatory and for the main part of the year this was true. No the third entrance exam was in the Hague just like the second one and in order to explain I have to go back to the second entrance exam I took.

After I was admitted for harmonica jazz there was a short discussion about what subject I would take instead of the compulsory classical technique lessons. Every trumpet player that studies jazz also has to study classical trumpet as a secondary subject. Since there is no one on staff that would be able to teach me classical harmonica technique it was decided that it would probably be beneficial for my breathing technique if I had singing lessons.

It was not a busy day filled with difficult lessons, stern teachers and loads of homework. The day consisted mostly of speeches, a concert and champagne. A very relaxed start of the year. I met a few people I went to school with in Amsterdam and that are also starting in The Hague this year, including the piano player that caused me to do this years entrance exam. We did a short dance in the entrance hall of the school. I received my schedule for this year and I was happy to see that I only have to be at school 3 days in the week. We have had a great week of workshops ranging from modern dance to composition to senegalese drumming. Each night a concert was held by teachers from the different departments.
I have also had my first harmonica lessons and I can tell you this; I am going to learn a lot this year and it is going to be bebop from start to end.
The first thing we worked on was a simple riff that I found very difficult to play. One exam I was counting on passing was piano or rather harmony at the piano. I thought I did okay, I made very few errors, but apparently I was much too slow at everything so I get a second chance in may.

Tomorrow I have 2 exams. The first transcribing the second analysis. The analysis is easy for me, it is a sort of musical mathematics and I am certain I will do well. The transcribing is what I have most difficulty with.
Tomorrow I have my very last exam of this school year. It is also the most important exam of the year: my harmonica exam. I already had a technical exam on the harmonica, which I passed with flying colors. Tommorow is the jazz exam. I am playing three songs: "Anthropology", "Whisper Not" and "Pennies From Heaven". On friday I had a short rehearsel with the band (bass drums and guitar) and I am feeling moderately confident. The band is teriffic so there are no worries there, it is mainly my own nerves that I am worried about. And worrying about them only makes them worse.

I started my second main subject - jazz singing - this year and it is going well. I enjoy singing a lot, and the effects on my harmonica playing are very good. I have more air, more control and am learning a lot of new things about expression that I wouldn't have if I hadn't been studying singing next to my harmonica studies.
My harmonica studies are going well too, believe it or not I spent the first couple of months of this year playing blues and only blues. At the moment I have lessons from Eric Vloeimans who is a wonderfull trumpet player and he has had me practicing blues in 12 keys very carefully.
